Yes, the movie.

I was in my First Year in High School when this was shown. 1997 to be exact.

I have this Math teacher, Ms. Meiko, who kept on mentioning the movie. Makes me wonder what was it all about that made her love it so much. I’ve watched it back then and I barely understood it, all that I know is that it’s about a girl who’s deeply in love with a guy bestfriend. Practically, that’s it. Little did I know things on love..

Just this Sunday afternoon, I thought of watching it again.. Looking at Julia Roberts’ fashion (big hair and loose suit) I can easily tell that this has nearly been a decade ago. Julianne (Julia) is a well-accomplished food critic, that’s how it all started.. There goes a call from Mike (the bestfriend) that he wanted a talk with her. Being the very busy people they are, they barely have time to talk just like how they used to. Julianne’s 28th birthday is in about 3 weeks that made her remember her and Mike’s pact (in the past) that when one of them turns 28 and are still single, they would get married.. seriously the two of them. So having her birthday in a few weeks, she was up to Mike and tell him about it. However, Mike had a bigger news.. he was about to get married in 4 days. Moment of shock for Julianne. She cannot believe what she just heard. All the while she thought that she was about to marry her bestfriend… Turns out, that was what she JUST thought. Mike asked her to be by his side on that day and if she can fly to Chicago.. of course the bestfriend that she was, she was up to it. She had greater plans though, she was thinking of getting Mike life back in her life..

No, no, no, no. I’m a busy girl. I’ve got exactly four days to break up a wedding, steal the bride’s fella and I haven’t one clue how to do it.

The scene in the Chicago airport where she saw Mike, my heart thumped. The typical romantic story. The problem is, this is just the beginning of either a happy or not-so-happy ending. That same moment, she also met Kimmie (Cameron Diaz), the bride. Kim was perfect. Nevertheless, she was really on the move to separate the two and have Mike back in her life. Kim knew everything about Julianne, Mike has told her everything.. Kim too was very happy to have met Julianne and was even overjoyed to be with her. In 3 seconds, she wanted Julianne to be her bestfriend too. Putting myself in Julianne’s shoes, it is like fighting for what you should do for others or for yourself. Realizing she loves Mike but was not able to tell it within the 9 years that they have been together. And she was sure that Mike still does love her. She attempted to talk to Mike about it but failed. The night before the wedding, Mike got a message that made him doubt about his relationship about Kim. He told Julianne that he would call-off the wedding. Julianne on the other hand is not so sure on how she feels upon hearing the news. First, she set it up. Second, she’s messing the could-have-been best day of her bestfriend! She somehow feel responsible for what was happening. The next day was the wedding day. Finally, she had guts to tell Mike about how she really feels and the reason why she flew to Chicago.

It has been a long while since she realized on how she loves Mike…and probably was too late. Mike was sincerely in love with Kim and so was Kim with Mike. Breaking it up could be a heinous crime. Finally, she gave them her blessings. She was happy for both of them, Mike and Kimmie, but at the same time…hurt. :(

Not the typical happy ending love story, huh?

Well yeah, it’s reality. After this second view of the flick, I realized why Ms. Meiko was so into it. She has shared in class that she has this bestfriend, Sir Sam. Could have been she was also in love with him that made her relate herself to Julianne.

Nevertheless, though I’m 24.. I know very little on love. As per what Julianne has done, I agree.. people could do really crazy things when in love. But then sometimes, we should also consider the feelings of other people not just our own. I believe that love is a two-way thing.

When you love someone.. just say it. Say it out loud otherwise, the moment just passes by… :(
